Cleaning Your Computer
Cleaning Your Computer
**Cleaning your computer can be quick and painless…if you know what you are doing. If you are unfamiliar with electronics, it is always best to have a professional handle this process.
Benefits of Cleaning your Computer
Keeping your computer clean can reduce the need for expensive maintenance and repairs. Just like you take care of a home or car, your computer requires the same love and attention to keep it in peak condition. Think about going about your daily tasks with multiple layers of clothing on. How would this affect your ability to perform daily tasks? Just like us, a computer is less efficient with layers of dust and grime. Build up prevents the fans from running smoothly causing your system to overheat. Overheating interrupts your workflow and damages components. This can lead to the need for replacing components, or possibly the entire computer.
How often should you be cleaning your computer? We recommend cleaning your computer once every 3-6 months, depending on your work environment. If your workspace is dustier than average or if you smoke or have pets, you may want to clean it as frequently as every month.
Process (Keep in mind these instructions are for a desktop PC)
You will need:
- Microfiber Cloths
- Small Soft-bristled Brush
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Cotton Swabs
- Compressed Air
Step 1: Make sure your PC is powered off and unplug everything from the power outlet. Disconnect everything from the tower. Now remove the cover, often it is screwed in place. This is where you will need the screwdriver. Carefully remove the cover placing the screws in a safe place. Keep in mind computer fans are often mounted to the cover and pulling quickly could cause damage to the connecting wires.
Step 2: Clean the inside of the cover and the fan using the tools listed above. Gently wipe the inside of the cover with a dry microfiber cloth. Use the can of compressed air to blow out any dust that has collected in the fan. Hold the fan blades while you are doing this to stop them from moving. This will prevent damage. Use the small brush to clear any remaining dust. Alternately, you can use cotton swabs to get any stuck-on dirt & grime.
Step 3: Use the compressed air to blow out the motherboard. Wipe with the microfiber cloth in needed. Give extra attention to any gaps between components. The small brush comes in handy here. Remember to be gentle so that no components are bumped loose.
Step 4: Look at the graphics card, remove it if necessary. Sometimes they have their own fan. If this is the case, use the same process as above, remembering to hold the blade in place. Give the entire care a gentle wipe before returning it to it proper place.
Step 5: Clean around the power supply. Using the air again, blow out any dust that has collected around the power supply. Use a cotton swab or the brush to get any hard to reach areas.
Step 6: Replace any parts that were removed for cleaning and put the cover back on, securing it in place with any screws that were removed.
Step 7: Move on to the peripherals. This includes keyboard, monitor, mouse, webcam, and anything else attached to your computer. First use a dry cloth to wipe away any dirt or dust. For the keyboard, flip it upside down and use the compressed air to blow out anything that has collected between or below the keys. Then dampen (do not soak) a cloth with rubbing alcohol and repeat the cleaning process. Rubbing alcohol is safe to use on electronics as it evaporates quickly. A bonus is it’s disinfecting properties. Note: be careful not to apply too much pressure to the monitor otherwise you might end up with damage to the display.
Step 8: Once everything is clean and all the alcohol has dried, reattach your peripherals and plug everything back into the power outlet. Your computer is now clean!
